About this work

Description

Hand-drawn illustration using ink and watercolour on paper. 'The Phlebotomist' depicts a lady wearing a long black evening gown and gloves using a needle and syringe to take blood from the arm of a female patient. Following hip-replacement surgery, the artist recorded her experiences and emotions during her post-operative recovery. One of the visitors to her home was the phlebotomist, charged with taking a blood sample to test for anaemia. The patient feeling very nervous about needles, closed her eyes, and this is the image of the phlebotomist which arose in her imagination.
