About this work

Description

A statue of Hermaphroditus reclining. The figure is similar to the statue of the reclining Hermaphroditus in the Louvre, which was bought by Napoleon from the Borghese family in Rome in 1807. However, the Louvre Hermaphroditus reclines on a stone mattress and pillow sculpted by Bernini, whereas the present figure reclines on a piece of undressed rock. This one appears to show the sculpture in the Museo Nazionale di Roma, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme
