PANEL 18 SFGU=Y
Wellcome Library, London
This is a medium power view of a section of trachea showing complete necrosis of the surface epithelium which has been replaced by a pseudomembrane of fibrin, necrotic cells and bacteria. From a case of diphtheria. H&E stain.
Formation of a thick grey membrane over the tonsils and throat is characteristic of nasopharyngeal diphtheria and is potentially fatal. Release of the diphtheria toxin from Corynebacterium diphtheriae causes necrosis of the epithelium. An inflammatory reaction causes exudation of fluid and leucocytes. This fluid clots and grips the dead cells within it forming a false membrane.
