Colony of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans
A colony of <I>Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans</I>, one of the thousands of different types of bacteria found in the mouth. It is one of the main causes of gum disease, which, as well as putting teeth at risk, has been linked with certain kinds of heart disease. The distictive pattern is typical of this type of bacteria and is a result of the conditions under which it is grown.
