Description

Amulet. Ink on paper. Sudanese, 19th century. This Sudanese drawing of an amulet includes spells against the 'evil eye'. The evil eye is a belief in many cultures that a malevolent look can cause misfortune, illness or injury to whomever it is directed. It is common to wear an amulet or charm for protection against its powers. MS Arabic 21, Wellcome Library.
