About this work

Description

Identified by the author of this engraving as showing Joan Flower in the centre and her two daughters Margaret and Philipa (Philip) on the left and right respectively. However, the publisher of the woodcuts of which this engraving is a copy lettered the figures with the names of Anne Baker, Ioanne Willimot and Ellen Greene, al from Leicestershire, who are therefore more likely to be the intended subjects. Gibson, loc. cit., concludes that Margaret and Philippa Flower were executed in 1618 or 1619, and states that the outcome of the three Leicestershire women is unknown
