About this work

Description

The reference by Queen Victoria to "Van Amburg" refers to a cage full of wild animals exhibited at Dury Lane Theatre which was a sensation at the time. Lord Melbourne is the lion. Poulet Thompson and Lord John Russell tug at a morsel inscribed "corn law question". Also in the cage are Lords Palmerston, Normanby, Lansdowne and Holland and Thomas Spring-Rice. The print refers to the radicals intention to repeal or modify the corn laws
