About this work

Description

Left, a bishop seen from the side, probably Saint Ildefonso, bishop of Toledo between 657 and 667. The second scene down on his cape may be the miraculous moment when Saint Ildefonso received the chasuble from the Virgin as a special prize for writing 'De virginitate perpetua Sanctae Mariae': El Greco's depiction shows him from the front. Centre: a maja similar to one painted by Goya. Right, a portrait of Velázquez
