What does copyright mean?

Copyright gives legal protection to creators of works for a limited period of time so that during that period they can safely exploit their works without fear of infringement.

What is a free image?

Free images are those available completely free-of-charge in high resolution under a CC-BY licence. If an image is not marked ‘rights-managed’ then it is free to use at both high and low resolution.

What is a rights-managed image?

A rights-managed image is an image for which Wellcome Images does not own the copyright. The image has been supplied by one of our contributors and we manage terms of use for the contributor. You may have to pay a reproduction fee to use a rights-managed image.

How is the copyright in the images protected?

All the images on the site are invisibly watermarked, identifying them as Wellcome Images. This enables us to prove the provenance of any images which are used inappropriately.

Each image holds identifying, credit and catalogue information in its IPTC header. The IPTC is the International Press Telecommunications Council.

What are reproduction fees and how are they calculated?

Reproduction fees are charged when our rights-managed images are reproduced in, for example, books, magazines, leaflets, broadcast, exhibitions, etc. This licences the use of our images for a specific purpose and duration. They are calculated according to the quantity, distribution and prominence of the images used and must be agreed prior to use. Any usage without our permission may incur a surcharge.

How do I obtain rights-managed images in high resolution?

From a search results page, gallery page or light box page select the check-box under each image you wish to order. Remember logging in to your account will give greater flexibility when searching.

  1. Click Download hi-res images at the top of the screen.
  2. The screen will reload with just the selected images displaying. If you uncheck images at this point they will not download with your set. Complete the reCaptcha form and agree the terms and conditions. Click Next.
  3. You will be asked to sign-in if you have not done so already. If you are a new user click Registration to register on the site.
  4. The page will reload with a usage form that will ask you to specify how the images will be used. You will also be asked to confirm your contact details.
  5. A message will inform you that your request has been forwarded to us. We will confirm your request by email. A member of our picture research team will contact you shortly to fulfil your order.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept the following credit/debit cards: Mastercard/Eurocard, Visa/Delta and Switch/Maestro/Solo. We also accept cheques denominated in pounds sterling and drawn on a UK bank. All UK customers will be charged UK VAT. Customers from the EU will be charged UK VAT unless able to provide us with a EU VAT registration number.

If you live outside the EU your order will not be subject to UK VAT. However, such orders may be subject to customs charges and local taxes.

Please note that payments cannot currently be made online.

How do I cancel an order?
