Wellcome Images is a world-class collection relating to biomedical science and its history. From April 2017 we will be changing how we provide access to contemporary, rights-managed images.
Wellcome has a long history of championing the open sharing of information and resources. Hundreds of thousands of items from our historical collection have been made freely available through our library digitisation programme including the high resolution images on this website.
At present, we make all images available freely for teaching and research purposes. We also offer contributed, rights-managed images for commercial use in return for a fee, which we share with the contributors.
From April 2017, we will no longer offer a commercial licensing service and Wellcome Images will be integrated into the broader Wellcome Collection library. This will allow Wellcome Collection to focus on providing access to all its resources as openly as possible.
Will contemporary images still be available?
We've invited our image contributors to make their images available under one of these licences or to opt out. For those who choose to opt out, their images will no longer be available in the collection from April 2017.
This does not affect the historical images, which will remain free of charge to use for any purpose.
Wellcome Image Awards
We will be unveiling the latest Wellcome Image Awards winners on 15 March 2017. From 16 March, exhibitions of the winners will open simultaneously in science centres across the UK from Aberdeen to the Eden Project. The winners will also be on show in the windows of Wellcome headquarters in Euston Road, London. Find out more:wellcomeimageawards.org
